Fall back with confidence
Clocks are set to fall back this weekend in Ontario and that means shorter days and longer nights.
The end of Daylight Savings Time (DST) means that we gain an hour, although it also means there’s less daylight for doing things and going places. While we adjust to the change in time, here are some things we should keep top-of-mind to help protect our homes, cars and businesses.
Keep safe with these DST tips
For vehicles and drivers
- Expect darker commutes so be extra cautious and alert for pedestrians.
- Remember to turn on your headlights and adjust your driving habits.
- Some people may feel sleep deprived in the first week after the time shift. Make sure to get proper rest, to help you stay alert behind the wheel.
- Check that your car’s tires, brakes and lights are working.
For homes or businesses
- The time change is a good reminder to check and replace fire and smoke alarm batteries.
- With nightfall coming earlier, remember to turn on outdoor lights earlier too.
- Consider installing outdoor motion-sensor lights to illuminate your property and help prevent slips and falls.
- Installing smart systems for both indoor and outdoor lighting, or using timers are helpful to make it appear that your property is occupied to help deter burglars or vandals.
It’s also a good time to review your coverage
Whether it’s springing forward or falling back, the clock adjustment is also a reminder to review your situation and how it affects your insurance.
If you made major renovations to your property during the summer such as upgrading your kitchen or finishing your basement, you may need to adjust your property insurance coverage amounts so that these upgrades are covered. Some other improvements such as new weather-resistant roof or siding could result in some discounts. Visit our personal property and commercial property insurance pages to learn more.
If you’re thinking about installing winter tires, you can get a discount on your Ontario auto policy. If you’re thinking about additional protection for you and your vehicle, there are a number of valuable optional coverages available. Visit our personal auto and commercial auto insurance pages to learn more.
