Water Coverage

A comprehensive personal property insurance policy only covers some types of water damage to your home or property. It doesn’t cover water damage due to sewer back-up or overland water, which are coverage add-ons that can be added to a personal property policy.

We always offer optional water coverage on personal property policies that are well worth the additional premium.

Sewer back-up coverage (optional)
  • Covers loss or damage to the home caused by the back-up or escape of water from a sewer, septic system, or sump pump
  • Covers loss or damage to the contents of the home such as clothes, furniture and appliances caused by the back-up or escape of water from a sewer, septic system, or sump pump
Overland water coverage  (optional)
  • Covers loss or damage to the home caused by overland water, which is water that enters the properly suddenly and accidentally due to the the overflow of lakes and rivers, the sudden accumulation or run-off of surface waters such as torrential rain, and the sudden and accidental entrance of water through basement walls, foundation, or floor
  • Covers loss or damage to the contents of the home such as clothes, furniture and appliances caused by overland water
Water coverage (included in a comprehensive property policy)
  • Covers loss or damage to the home and contents caused by the sudden and accidental escape of water, unless excluded from the policy

Common Claims

Sewer back-up coverage

During a heavy rainfall, the municipal sewer system was overwhelmed and caused raw sewage to back up through your home’s basement floor drain and flooded the basement with contaminated water. Your basement needed cleaning and disinfecting, as well as replacing walls, furniture and appliances.

Overland water

During a torrential rainstorm, a creek overflowed into the city’s streets and as a result, water entered your home through the basement windows and doors. The accumulated water damaged the basement’s flooring, walls, furniture and appliances which all needed to be repaired and replaced.

Water coverage

A washing machine (on the second floor) hose cracked and leaked while you were at work, causing a flood and seeped into the first floor. The water damaged the walls and floors which needed to be repaired.
